Agoro Sare, Lwak Girls lift Nyanza schools' football titles

Kisumu Day appealed against Agoro Sare claiming they fielded an ineligible player.

Agoro Sare High School and St Mary’s Lwak Girls are the new Nyanza region secondary boys’ soccer champions.

In the boys’ category, Agoro Sare beat five-time Nyanza champions Kisumu Day 7-6 on post-match penalties to lift the title during the final  played at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology 

The teams played to a barren draw after extra time, forcing the dramatic shootout to decide the winner. 

Agoro Sare’s chief principal Isaac Okeyo promised they will not let Nyanza down at the nationals.

“We are going to fly Nyanza fly high. The championship has been competitive and I want to thank Kisumu Day for giving us a run for our money. Both teams were disciplined while the match officials were fair,” said Okeyo.

However, Kisumu Day appealed against Agoro Sare claiming they fielded an ineligible player. Team manager Booker Agutu alleged the player in question Godfrey Odira played for Dagoretti High in last year’s competition.

In the girls' category, the final between 2019 national champions Nyakach Girls and St Mary’s Lwak was also decided on penalties after a 1-1 draw in extra time. During the shootout at Maranda School, Lwak won 2-0 in the shootout which saw Nyakach miss all four penalty kicks.

Onjiko School bagged the boys’ basketball title after edging Godbura 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-14) to lift the title.

Godbura qualified for the finals after Itumbe Mixed were disqualified for fielding ineligible players. After losing to Itumbe Mixed in the semis, Godbura successfully appealed against the Kisii County champions.

In the girls’ category, Nyakach Girls came from a set down to beat Nyakongo Secondary 3-1 (15-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-8) to retain the title.

Last year’s second runner-up Oyugi Ogango upset Nyakach Girls 40-37 in a see-saw final to lift the girls' netball title.

In 3x3 basketball, Onjiko reigned supreme after a comfortable 18-10 over rivals Agoro Sare while Ototo edged Ng’iya Girls High School 9-6 in another tough final played at Nyamira Girls.

Onjiko and Ototo also bagged the basketball titles during the first term. The four-day championship was dominated by Kisumu County schools.

Kisumu County's Onjiko (3x3 basketball and boys’ volleyball),  Nyakach Girls (girls volleyball) while Maseno School will represent the county in rugby 7’s despite losing 5-0 against St Mary’s Yala.

Winners will represent the region at the national championships scheduled for Kakamega High School from August 8 to 14. Meanwhile, a referee’s clinic will be held on August 5 and 6 at Kakamega High.
