Match day 16 of the Kenya Women's Premier League is set for this weekend as the race for the coveted title and a place in the Caf Women's Champion's League qualifiers hots up.

The top two teams, Gaspo Women and Vihiga Queens, both have 34 points. The pair have opened a five-point gap against third-placed Ulinzi Starlets.

Abrasive battles are expected in the remaining seven games with the unpredictable title battle tipped to go down to the wire.

Action resume after the Women's Cup last weekend that was full of surprises where both Vihiga and Gaspo were dumped out of the competition in the round of 16.

WPL defending champions, Vihiga, have a date with Bunyore Starlets on Sunday.

The Vihiga County derby will be played at the Mumias Sports Complex. Vihiga, four-time WPL winners, must bounce back to winning ways. The match will be tricky for the Legacy Makers because Bunyore is a defensively sound team that has conceded only 15 goals.

Leaders Gaspo take on Trans Nzoia Falcons at the Kenyatta Stadium, Kitale, in an action-packed fixture. The Gatundu-based side is eyeing it's first league title. The team recently appointed Jacob 'Ghost' Mulee as head coach in a boost to the team's title aspirations.

A titanic battle is expected at Ulinzi Sports Complex as the soldiers host Thika Queens. Thika, the 2021 champions, will be keen on revenge after losing the reverse fixture 3-0.

"They (Ulinzi) owe us three points. We are going for nothing other than revenge. They annihilated us in the first leg because of fatigue. We played three matches in a span of seven days so it was tough for us.," Fred Majani, the Thika coach said.

Elsewhere, fourth-placed Nakuru City Queens start as favourites against already relegated Kayole Starlets. Nakuru will lip-frog Ulinzi to third position with a win provided the soldiers drop points in their fixture.
