The fourth edition of the National Teachers Championships will be held at Alliance High School, Kiambu from April 22-25.

This is according to the Kenya Teachers Games Association chairman, George Makheti who expects more than 500 participants to grace this year's assignment.

The competition will have 16 teams drawn into four groups.

Group 'A' has Gatundu, Vihiga, Migori and Kilifi. Bungoma headlines group 'B' which also features Embu, Homabay and Lari.

Winners of the last two editions, Kwale, will look to defend their title in group C alongside Kakamega, Nyandarua and Trans Nzoia while Mt. Elgon, Nyamira, Murang'a and Machakos battle it out in group 'D'.

"The objective of the competition is to keep the teachers fit so that they can be role models to the students. It is also meant for bonding purposes and familiarity among teachers. We also encourage more regions to enroll for the games," Makheti said.

"It is surprising that teachers from neighboring schools do not know each other. After playing, we advise students in the host school to maintain focus and try to balance sports and academics while at the same time, abstaining from negative social vices like drug abuse," Makheti added.

The first edition of the championship was held in Kakamega between December 22-23, 2021. Mombasa and Nakuru hosted the last two editions last year.

"We were lucky to host the tournament twice last year but we want to make it an annual assignment," Makheti observed.

At the same time, Makheti said they are considering introducing women into the competition.  He further pointed out that the association is exploiting the possibility of incorporating other disciplines, to make it an all-inclusive championship.

"Volleyball and handball will be played in the next edition. Female teachers have been cheering us but we want to make them busy as well."

CIC insurance and KUPPET are among the sponsors but organisers hope more corporates will support the initiative.
