Infantino re-elected Fifa president

There being no other candidate who had shown interest, the Fifa congress didn’t need to go to voting as Infantino secured his second official term.

Gianni Infantino was on Thursday elected by acclamation as the Fifa president for the period of 2023-2027 at the 73rd FIFA congress in Kigali, Rwanda.

There being no other candidate who had shown interest, the FIFA congress didn’t need to go to voting as Infantino secured his second official term. He will be eligible to stand for a third term in 2027.

Speaking immediately after the re-election, Infantino said: “I ensure you my continued commitment to the game. Always remember football is joy, happiness, passion and fun. Football is here to remind us of our beautiful moment.”

Infantino was congratulated by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who presented the Talent development scheme, saying: "Congratulations Gianni for your convincing re-election as Fifa president."

Fifa secretary general Fatma Samoura told the president: “We love you Infantino” with the head of Fifa referees committee, Pierluigi Collina, saying “Congratulations on your re-election. We’ve worked together for years and we'll continue."

The 73rd Congress was attended by Rwanda president Paul Kagame. 

Kenya was represented by Football Kenya Federation General Secretary Barry Otieno and vice-president Doris Petra.
