Over 120,000 residents of Migori county will benefit from Universal Health Care following launch of the health insurance kitty.
Speaking during the unveiling of UHC at Migori stadium on Friday, county commissioner Meru Mwangi said the programme will be rolled out across all eight subcounties.
“This is part of the Big Four agenda of the Kenya government, which has been rolled out across the country to benefit the less privileged and needy individuals in our society,” he said.
He said the project will be rolled out by the county government since the health function has been devolved.
Migori has so far identified and registered 120,000 individuals, out of a population of 1.6 million.
“However, 24,000 individuals will be benefiting from the scheme this year while the rest will be added in other phases,” Migori health executive Kephers Nyamita said.
“We will annually be upgrading the to 120,000 total to ensure that all of them benefit from the scheme,” he added.
Mwangi said 90 per cent of hospitals in Migori, both public and private, have been registered to offer the National Hospital Insurance Fund.
“Once registered, beneficiaries will benefit from both private and public hospitals for both inpatient and out-patient services,” he said.
Migori NHIF branch manager Mark Chepchieng said all beneficiaries will be biometrically registered to start benefitting from the services.
