A poll conducted by a research company CPS International has ranked Mount Kenya University as the fourth best Kenyan university in sports. This was in a poll that sampled 55 local institutions of higher learning.
CPS said it used 17 variables to rank 55 universities across the country. The biggest point earner in the two-month research was the level of investment in sporting facilities which was graded between zero and 100. Also considered is the annual budgetary allocation to sports by the university as well as the number of sporting activities.
The varsity has invested heavily in sports across all campuses with state of the art sports infrastructure ranging from an Olympic size swimming pool, indoor games arena, sports buses among others.
Recently, a team of three athletes sponsored by the university emerged third at the inter-university games in South Africa for Africa, bringing home eight medals.
Some of the unique games available at the university are Taekwondo, Chess, Rugby and Cricket. Overall there are more than 15 games that students are engaged in. The university recently invested in a gaming centre in its Mombasa campus.
The CPS International poll listed seven public universities while only three private universities made their mark among the top 10 universities in sports. The ranking is listed below:

3. United States International University
4. Mount Kenya University
5. Strathmore University
6. Moi University
7. Egerton University
8. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
9. University of Eldoret
10. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University
