Dumas eclipse ANU for second win in four matches

Equity Bank Dumas eclipsed Africa Nazarene University 67-52 in a Kenya National Basketball League clash at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

The bankers — who have now won two of their four games so far— got off to a flying start, leading 19-7 in the first quarter. The students took charge in the second with a 16-15 cushion.

Dumas took the third quarter 20-16 before a 13-13 deadlocked in the deciding quarter. Victors Bosire and Ivan Ombima combined for the victors’ 16 points.

In the ladies division, Strathmore University Swords were too much for Kenyatta University Oryx, cutting them to size in an 81-7 demolition. The winners led 41-0 at half time.

“The truth of the matter is that KU are a weak team. We can’t gauge ourselves with a win over them. But still we did not play well. We could have easily hit a century,” said Swords’ coach Ronny Owino.

“We missed a lot of baskets under the rim in the third quarter where they scored their only points of the game.”

Consolata Atieno notched 21 points while Joyce Otiende and Joy Mupalia added 13 and 10 points respectively.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) Lynx pinned down Eldonets to emerge 46-43 winners in a close contest. The winners led 17-16 at half time.

Margaret Spinks dropped 12 points and Alfine Kinya contributed 11 as Sheila Cherotich grabbed the visitors’ 13.

It was a fruitful weekend for Lynx, who also whipped Kenyatta University Oryx 57-21 the previous day as Spinks hit 13 and Diana Akinyi 12.

“We are rebuilding and this win is a motivation to this young group of girls,” beamed Jkuat coach Mary Chepkoi.

“We are picking up well as, taking one game at a time as we adjust depending on the opponent of the day.”

In the lower division, Zetech University stopped Stanbic Shield’s long unbeaten run in the league when they humbled them 50-44. Strathmore University beat Neosasa 70-60.

In Nakuru, Congo Nets beat Nebulus 58-50 and also won 64-53 against Hope.

Hope clobbered Kisii Neighbours 83-50 and Nebulus defeated Cabals 73-63.

Friday night matches saw Ulinzi Warriors disarm University of Nairobi Terrorists 54-33 and Zetech University Sparks shone 95-40 over UoN Dynamites.
