Kenya Ports Authority started their FIBA Africa Zone Five Club Championships on the right note, thrashing Hoops of Rwanda 80-36 in the opener at National Indoor Stadium, Dar es Salaam on Friday.

The ports women, finalist in 2019 had a slow start, taking the first quarter 20-11 before trailing 13-14 in the second.

But coach Anthony Ojukwu’s halftime talk saw KPA return with vengeance, roping the Rwandese 25-5 and 22-6 in the last two quarters.

Natalie Mwangale led the Kenyans’ scoring tally with 19 points, Betty Kalanga bagged 15, Victoria Reynolds made 13 and Vilma Owino shot 11.

Hoops Ebengo Feza was the only player from the losing side to hit double figure with 11 as Sifa Ineza contributed nine.

A total of six teams are taking part in the five-day round robin championships whose winners will represent the region in the continental championships. They include Equity Bank, KPA, (Kenya), Hoops (Rwanda), Gladiators (Burundi) , Don Bosco (Tanzania) and REG (Rwanda).
