After ruling New York Marathon champion, Albert Korir has set his eyes on even bigger honours come next year's World athletics Championships in Oregon, USA.
Korir, who won the New York City marathon on Sunday on his second attempt, said the win has prompted him to dream big and hopes Athletics Kenya will consider him for the global show.
“Winning this race has elevated me to another level and I can't wait to represent the country at the World Championships,” said Korir, the 2019 Ottawa Marathon champion.
He said he has played his part and he can only hope that the federation will consider him for next year's event subject to good health and fitness.
“I understand it's not going to be easy to make the cut considering the number of local athletes currently ranked in the top 100. However, It's my prayers that I will be among them,” he added.
In 2019, Korir finished second at the New York City Marathon, behind Geoffrey Kamworor.
The Elgeyo Marakwet county-based runner, who launched his marathon career at the 2014 Kass Marathon in Eldoret, won the New York City race in 2:08:22 ahead of Moroccan Mohamed Reda El Aaraby (2:09:06) and Italian Eyob Faniel (2:09:52).
“This is a big win for me, especially after finishing second in 2019. It was a tough race but I, nonetheless, enjoyed it. The fact that we didn't have pace-makers took toll on us as we had to push ourselves to the limit,” he said.
Another Kenyan and World Half Marathon record holder Kibiwott Kandie, who was also debuting in the race, finished ninth.
Apart from Ottawa, Houston and Kass marathon, Korir was second at the Cape Town marathon, second at Lake Biwa marathon, second in Barcelona and third at Ljubljana marathon.
