Kenya has expressed its commitment to deepen cooperation with Finland in forestry and environmental sustainability, in a bid to achieve the 30 per cent forest cover by 2032.

President William Ruto made the announcement during a meeting between with his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb who is in the country on a state visit.

The two leaders identified forestry as a key area for collaboration, with Ruto praising Finland’s impressive forest cover, which spans over 75 per cent of its landmass.

Ruto launched the drive in December 2022. Under the plan, 1.5 trees are to be planted every year.

The initiative is aimed at reducing greenhouse emissions, stopping and reversing deforestation and, restoring 5.1 million hectares of deforested and degraded landscapes through the African Landscape Restoration Initiative.

“I commend Finland for maintaining a forest cover of over 75 per cent of its landmass. We will collaborate closely to draw on Finland’s expertise as we pursue our ambitious goal,” Ruto said.

In this effort, the country will draw on Finland’s vast experience in sustainable forest management, reforestation technologies, and biodiversity conservation.

Ruto emphasised that Kenya is eager to learn how Finland effectively balances environmental protection with economic development, as it pursues its own green growth agenda.

The collaboration, he pointed out, aligns with the broader climate action strategy and efforts to combat the adverse effects of climate change.

“Finland’s success in maintaining a thriving forest ecosystem while fostering economic development provides a valuable model for Kenya,” he said.

The two nations also discussed potential knowledge and technology exchange programs, particularly in reforestation methods, forest monitoring systems, and community-driven conservation initiatives.

Ruto expressed optimism that the partnership would not only accelerate Kenya’s afforestation goals but also empower local communities through green jobs and sustainable livelihoods.

The leaders agreed to establish a joint task force to map out actionable areas of cooperation and to facilitate capacity building through academic and technical exchanges.
