Chebet defends World Cross title as Kenya sweeps top five in women's senior race

Beatrice Chebet successfully defended her World Cross country title clocking 31:05 and leading a clean top-five sweep for Kenya in the women's senior race in Belgrade, Serbia.

Beatrice Chebet became the first senior woman to win a back-to-back World Cross Country title since Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba back in 2006.

Hot on Chebet's heels, Lilian Kasait secured second place in 31:08, closely followed by Margaret Kipkemoi in third with a time of 31:09.

Emmaculate Anyango and Agnes Ngetich rounded out Kenya's dominance, finishing fourth and fifth respectively, with impressive times of 31:24 and 31:27.

Chebet's confidence in Kenya's prowess proved true as she had earlier predicted their dominance in Belgrade.

"Kenya has a strong team here, so hopefully we’ll return home with more medals and the team title," she stated confidently.

In the men's senior race, Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda successfully defended his title clocking 28:09.

Ethiopians Berihu Aregawi placed second in 28:12 with Benson Kiplangat securing the Podium finishes clocking 28:14.

Samuel Kibathi secured the men's U20 title clocking 22:40. Ethiopias Mezgebu Sime placed second (22:41) with Mathew Kipruto sealed off the podium finish (22:46).

The women's U20 race saw an Ethiopian 1-2-3 finish with little-known Marta Alemayo emerging victorious with a swift 19:28

Asayech Ayichew and Robe Dida claimed second and third place with times of 19:32 and 19:38.

Despite the Ethiopian dominance in the women's U20 category, Kenya's Sheila Chebet and Diana Cherotich showcased remarkable performances, securing fourth and fifth place with times of 19:45 and 19:47 respectively.

In the relay event, former World Under-20 1500m champion Purity Chepkirui led Kenya to victory, anchoring the team with a stellar time of 22:15.

Ethiopia followed closely in second place with a time of 22:43, while Great Britain completed the podium, clocking 23:00.
