Loibach, Kiprop to lead Team Kenya to Africa x-country meet

Tunisia.Athletics Kenya (AK) unveiled a team of 30 athletes and officials for the upcoming championship.

In Summary

• The team which will be led by AK Vice President Paul Mutwii is set to go into a residential training camp on February 11 at Watakatifu Wote in Ngong.

•Chebet won the women's 15km Road race at the 96th edition of the Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre in Sao Palo, Brazil clocking 50:06 in 202.

 Former world youth silver medallist, Sandrafelis Chebet and Grace Loibach are among the star athletes named Team Kenya for the Africa Cross Country Championship slated for February 25 in Hammamet, Tunisia.

Athletics Kenya (AK) unveiled a team of 30 athletes and officials for the upcoming championship.

Chebet won the women's 15km Road race at the 96th edition of the Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre in Sao Palo, Brazil clocking 50:06 in 202. 

On the other hand, Loibach, placed fourth in the women's 10km senior race after clocking 34.13 minutes at the World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia, last year 

In June 2023, she ran the eighth fastest 10,000m time of 29:47.08 on her debut over the distance to finish runner-up to Netherlands' Sifan Hassan (29:37.80) in Hengelo. 

Joining the duo will be the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics gold medallist Virginia Nyambura, Cintia Chepngeno, Gladys Kwamboka and Caren Chebet in the senior women's category.

The men's senior team will be led by the 2019 African Games gold medalist Robert Kiprop.

The 26-year-old secured his second national podium placing after finishing runner-up in the 5,000m in 2019 during the Kenyan Championships.

He will have the company of African U20 5,000m bronze medallist Vincent Kimaiyo, Brian Kiptoo, Vincent Langat, Fredrick Domongole and Naibei Kiplimo.

World U20 3,000m bronze medallist Nancy Cherop will lead the women's junior team. Cherop won 800m, 1,500m and 3,000m races in Ndola, Zambia during the Africa U18 Championships in 2023.

Diana Chepkemoi, Sheila Jebet, Judy Kemunto, Lucy Nduta and Sharon Chepkemoi form the rest of the team.

The men's U20 team is made up of Titus Kiprotich, Gideon Kipngetich, Clinton Kimutai, Simon Maywa, Joseph Njoroge and Joash Ruto.

World cross country champion and U20 1,500m silver medallist Mirriam Cherop and Youth Olympics 1500m silver medallist Winfred Nzisa will lead the nation's relay team.

Joining the duo will be Evaline Chepkoech, Edwin Kiprono, Victor Kipkirui and Newton Kipkurui.
