Jeptanui, Kibet star at inaugural Kapsisiwa Girls x-country run

Coming from Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Jeptanui clocked 21:14.92 to win the 6km senior women's.

• Kibet also from Iten won the 8km junior men's title in 24:29.7.

Caroline Jeptanui and Dennis Kibet were the winners of the inaugural Kapsisiwa Girls Run cross-country championships held on Saturday in Nandi County.

Coming from Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, Jeptanui clocked 21:14.92 to win the 6km senior women's title followed by Faith Jepchirchir (21:15.11) and Leah Jeruto completing the podium in 21:35.94.

Kibet, also from Iten, won the 8km junior men's title in 24:29.7.

He was closely followed by Reuben Longosiwa, from the Longosiwa running family in 24:33.10 as Jackson Kipleting was third in 24:43.80.

“This was an event meant for the girls and I came here with victory. It is a good initiative,” said Kibet,  who plans to compete for Kenya at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

The event was used to educate and nurture girl-child as future champions.

World marathon record holder Eliud Kipchoge said that for the country to have great runners, they need to start from the grass root and that is what is happening.

“We need these girls and come tomorrow, they will fly the Kenyan flag high,” Kipchoge, the double Olympic marathon champion said.
