Elite and upcoming athletes are set to battle at the North Rift Athletics Kenya track and field championships this Saturday.

Public Relations Officer Boniface Tiren said athletes from the five counties have been hard at work in readiness for the championships, which offer pathways to the World Championships in Budapest in August.

“These five counties have the majority of their athletes training in Iten and they know each other. This will serve to offer a serious and fierce battle for positions in their respective teams with an eye on the national trials ahead of Budapest,” said Tiren.

The counties include Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu.

Home of champions Iten will stage their championships at Tambach Teachers Training College, Trans Nzoia will be at Ndura Sports Complex in Kitale, West Pokot athletes head to Makutano, Turkana championships will be at Lodwar playground while Samburu athletes will converge at Maralal sports ground.

Tiren said their goal is to select a strong North Rift team for the national trials.
