Cheptai out to build on New York success at Prague Half Marathon

The 2008 World Cross Country junior silver medalist wants to exploit her second-place finish at the United States capital for good fortunes in Czech capital

The 2017 World Cross Country champion says her second-place finish at the New York City Half marathon has fuelled her desire for further success at upcoming road race competitions. 

Cheptai timed 67:37 at the New York Half Marathon,  behind champion Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia (67:35) as Karoline Grovdal of Norway finished third position in 68:07. 

Cheptai will be competing in Saturday's Prague Half Marathon and wants to improve on her result in the Czech capital. 

“As you know, I just came from the New York Half Marathon and I have not recovered well. My main purpose is to run well on this course,”  Cheptai said.

Despite the magnitude of the race, Cheptai says she is not under any pressure to return a credible result. 

“I want to run this race without pressure. The race will be too competitive because of the line-up hoping for the best results,” the 2016 Palo Alto 10,000m champion said. 

After finishing seventh at the Olympic Games in 10,000m, Cheptai will aim to represent the nation at the World Championships in 10,000m that will be staged in Oregon.

She finished seventh at the 2017 World Championships in London.

In Prague, Cheptai, who boasts a personal best at 66:43, will be up against compatriots Brenda Jepleting (65:44), Nelly Jepchumba (67:46), Nesphine Jepleting as well as  Ethiopian Ftaw Zeray Benabh.
