World bronze medalist Tirop found dead at Iten home

Tirop was part of Team Kenya's representative at the Tokyo Olympics.

World 10,000m bronze medalist Agnes Tirop is dead. 

The 2015 World Cross Country champion was found dead in her house in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County on Wednesday.

Her body had a stab wound on the neck.

Tirop has been living at an athletics camp after differing with her husband but returned two days ago at the home following reconciliation by relatives and friends.

Only last month, Tirop set the athletics world alight when she set a new women-only world record in 10km when she clocked 30:01 to cut the tape at the Adizero Road to Records event in Herzogenaurach, Germany.

Last week, she timed 30:20 in the women's 10km race at the Valencia Half Marathon when she finished second to Bahraini Kalkidan Gezahegne who timed 29:38 to set a new record. 

Tirop, the second youngest athlete to ever win gold at the World Cross Country Championship in 2015, was also part of Team Kenya's representative at the Tokyo Olympics. 

She finished fourth in 14:39.62 in the women's 5,000m, a race won by Dutchwoman Sifan Hassan.

Her other accomplishments on the track include gold at the 2013  Africa Cross Country Championship in Kampala, Uganda, a World Junior Cross Country title in 2013 in Bydgoszcz, Poland and a bronze in the 5000m in the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
