Kipyegon won her semi-final heat but team-mates Winny Chebet and Edinah Jebitok failed to advance to the final after placing last in their respective heats.
Kipyegon showed her class by winning the first semi-final, where she posted 3:56.80 with Ethiopian Freweyi Gebreezibher coming home second in 3:57.54. Gabriela Stafford of Canada posted 3:58.28 to place home third with Australia' Jessica Hull (3:58.81) and Japan's Tanaka Nozomi ( 3:59.19) rounding off the top five places in the heat.
Chebet, who is the reigning Africa champion finished last in the heat clocking 4:11.62
Newly crowned Olympic 5,000m champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands topped the second heat in 4:00.23.
Great Britain's Laura Muir came a close second in 4:00.73 as Linden Hall of Australia was third in 4:01.37. Uganda's Winnie Nanyondo took fourth position in 4:01.64 as Perez Marta of Spain took the final spot in 4:01.69
