Ayyoub Bouaddi World Cup debut against Brazil/Xinhua sports
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is proving to be more than a battle among football's established powers.
It is also becoming a stage for a new generation of talent determined to leave its mark on the world's biggest sporting event.
Among the tournament's early breakout stars is Morocco's 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. Making his World Cup debut against Brazil, the teenager produced a performance that stunned fans and pundits alike as Morocco secured a valuable 1-1 draw against the five-time world champions.
Bouaddi played with remarkable maturity and confidence, finishing the match with a 91 per cent pass accuracy rate, completing 60 of his 66 passes.
Even more impressive was his flawless passing in the final third, successfully completing all 16 of his passes in attacking areas.
Defensively, he recovered possession six times, made five interceptions, and won nine duels, underlining his influence on both sides of the ball.
Bouaddi's display earned praise from renowned football commentator Peter Drury, who described the teenager as a player beyond his years.
"The second youngest player ever to play for Morocco at a World Cup and he looked as though he was 28, not 18. He was the boss, wasn't he? In a match where the centre consists of Casemiro, Bruno Guimarães, Lucas Paquetá and Fabinho, a young boy, only 18 years old, Ayyoub Bouaddi, is running the show. What a performance. A superstar in the making."
Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi also expressed confidence in the youngster, insisting age is not a factor when selecting players.
"I only look at players' performance, not the age of the player. He could be 35 and if he plays well, he'll play, or 17. I'm not the guy to be afraid of playing youngsters. It was no risk. I know his qualities very well. We had a lot of meetings with him to get him to choose Morocco, and he was good. In the midfield, we have many for the future. For the future, we are confident."
Australia's Nestory Irankunda has also emerged as one of the tournament's exciting young talents after playing a key role in his country's victory over Turkey.
Germany's Jamal Musiala continued to showcase his world-class ability in Germany's dominant win over Curaçao, while Nathaniel Brown enhanced his growing reputation with an impressive all-round display.
Several other young stars, including Lamine Yamal, Florian Wirtz, Endrick and Warren Zaïre-Emery, are expected to play significant roles as the tournament progresses.
While football's biggest names continue to attract global attention, the opening days of the World Cup have shown that a new generation is ready to take centre stage.
If early performances are any indication, the future of the game is
already shining brightly in North America.
