Kabras RFC head coach Carlos Katywa has identified kick-off reception and breakdown efficiency as key areas his side must improve ahead of the resumption of the league in the new year.
Despite maintaining a 100 per cent record and sitting top of the log with maximum points, the South African tactician said there is still room for refinement.
“Our kick-off reception is a slight concern, and we need to get it right. If you win the kick-off, you can secure possession, dictate terms and play in the right areas of the pitch,” said Katywa.
He also pointed to issues at the breakdown, noting that unforced errors have crept into their game.
“We are making a couple of unforced errors at the breakdown, but I believe it’s something we can improve. We are trying to play a free-flowing game and minimise rucks. Given our height and size, the breakdown does not always favour us, but we have to adapt and improve,” he added.
Katywa, who at the start of the season promised to prioritise youth, praised the performances of youngsters Rayvone Ambale, Mike Lukusi, Jackson Siketi and Roy Maruti.
"The four have had impressive campaigns in the matches we have played. We are building a solid future in terms of young talent to complement the experienced players in the squad,” noted the coach.
Long-serving captain George Nyambua and fly-half Ntabeni Dukisa, who are currently on sabbatical, are expected to return in the new year after a demanding campaign last season.
“Nyambua and Dukisa had a heavy workload last year playing for Kabras and the Kenya Simbas, so we advised them to rest, recover and return recharged in the new year as we approach the business end of the season,” said Katywa.
The Kakamega-based side have made a blistering start to the campaign, opening with a 67–6 demolition of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology, thrashing Daystar University 58–0 and then annihilating Impala 123–0.
However, Katywa warned against complacency, insisting the team must remain focused. “The league is a marathon, not a sprint. We will regroup, return refreshed in the new year and be ready to compete and win,” he said.
