Champions Kabras begin their hunt for a fifth Kenya Cup title today when they face neighbours Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in the Lurambi derby at the Kakamega Showground.

The sugar millers, who have dominated the league for the past four seasons and boast a 40-match unbeaten run, face what could be a testing opener against their local rivals.

Head coach Carlos Katywa admitted their pre-season was far from smooth, with only seven weeks of preparation due to a busy off-season. However, he remains confident ahead of the new campaign.

“We are more than ready for the start of the season. It’s a marathon and not a sprint. We need to build momentum by taking one game at a time and see where it takes us,” said Katywa.

The South African added that young players will be given opportunities this season. “I’m a big believer in development and giving youth a chance, while building a side with a blend of both youth and experience,” he noted.

Kabras will lean on Kenya Sevens star Kevin Wekesa, Patrick Sabatia, Edward Mwaura, William Mwanji and captain George Nyambua to anchor the forwards.

In the backs, Barry Young, Brian Tanga, Griffin Chao and Jone Kubu are expected to drive play.

MMUST coach John Asila hopes his side will rise to the challenge against their more established neighbours.

“It’s a tall order for us, but we are relishing the battle. There are no easy games in the top tier, but the boys will hope to put in a strong performance,” said Asila.

Key players for the university side include new signings Nelson Omukuba, Simon Buluku, Joash Nchoro, Peterson Mongare and Abednego Onsogo.

Last season’s runners-up, Menengai Oilers, open their campaign at home against newly promoted Daystar University in Nakuru — a daunting assignment for the students, who lost 80–6 the last time they met in a friendly.

Former champions KCB host Impala at the Lions’ Den in Ruaraka, while Kisumu travel to Nairobi to face Nondies at Jamhuri Park.

Blak Blad welcome Strathmore Leos to Kenyatta University for a varsity derby, as Quins entertain Nakuru in a tricky match at the RFUEA Ground.

All matches kick off at 4 pm.
