Midfielder Elizabeth Muteshi says her first Harambee Starlets call-up has left her proud and with renewed determination as Kenya gears up for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers against the Gambia later this month.
Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba has assembled a 38-woman provisional squad for the two-legged qualifier.
“I felt great to get this call-up,” said Muteshi, who featured for the Rising Starlets during the 2023 U20 qualifiers against Cameroon.
“The coach encouraged us to work hard and aim for the senior team, and once there, to show what one is capable of. I thank God for this far. I plan to work hard so that I can remain in the senior team and show up for my country.”
The first leg will be played on October 24 at Nyayo Stadium, with the return match four days later at the Stade Lat Dior in Thiès, Senegal.
Odemba’s squad includes several fresh faces as she continues to blend youth and experience. Among them are goalkeepers Mercy Akoth (Vihiga Queens), another new call-up. The defence features Dorcas Neema (Kibera Soccer Women), Lavyne Ochola (Kayole Starlet), Kikky Masika (Zetech Sparks) and Lorine Ilavonga, who steps up from the U20s.
In midfield, Muteshi is joined by fellow U20 graduate Keziah Ngaira, while the attack sees Shirleen Opisa and Charity Midewa come in from the Rising Starlets. Nicoline Hawa, the 2024/25 FKF Women Division One top scorer from Iron Ladies FC, also earns her maiden call-up.
“We’re building a competitive squad that balances experience and promise. These players have shown hunger and this is their opportunity to prove they belong at this level,” said Odemba.
The team reported to camp on October 5 as preparations intensify. Kenya aim for a return to the continental stage for the first time since their debut at the 2016 WAFCON.
“Our goal is clear — we want to return to WAFCON. Every player in this squad understands the task ahead,” said Odemba.
