Bay
Club captain Steve Onyango says the priority is to build on their
resilience and push for consistency in the coming fixtures after their 2-1 comeback win against Nandi Hawks at Nairobi University grounds on Sunday.
Onyango is confident their ability to convert penalty corners will
remain a key strength in their matches ahead in the ongoing Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) West Zone league matches.
“We
showed character after going down, and that’s what we need going
forward. The league is tight, so we have to keep this momentum,” Odongo
said.
Coach
Brian Oweke echoed his skipper’s sentiments, noting that the team’s
performance is a template for handling pressure.
“We worked hard for
this and proved we can turn things around. The next matches will demand
the same discipline,” he said.
The
result saw Bay Club overturn a 55th-minute setback when Brandon Bii
fired Hawks ahead from open play, rallying back through two quick
penalty corners. They equalised in the 61st minute and the winner in the
64th minute to seal victory.
Hawks
captain Erick Serem admitted frustration after letting the lead slip,
saying, “We had control for large spells and should have closed it out.
We’ll regroup and work on game management before our next outing.”
Both
sides went into the break level at 0-0 after a tense first half, but
the second half delivered drama as Bay Club’s clinical set pieces proved
decisive.
The two
sides went head-to-head in the men's National men's League during the
break.
The league had taken a break to
pave the way for national team training as well as the Over 40 Masters
tournament, where Kenya, as the hosts, had mixed results against visiting
Ghana.
Ghana Masters team got the better of the Kenya Police Masters Hockey team
at the Dashmesh Hockey Stadium on Sunday, winning 4-1 after Kenya
beat them 5-1 and 2-0 in the initial matches. The team will now prepare
for the Kenya Masters in August 2026.
