National 800m champion Lilian Odira has set the stage for a memorable World Athletics Championship debut next month after storming to a lifetime best at the Silesia Diamond League.
The 26-year-old slashed more than two seconds off her previous best, clocking 1:56.52 to finish second in her maiden Diamond League outing. Her previous best of 1:58.53 had come at last year’s Paris Olympic Games.
In Silesia, Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson claimed a statement victory in her first competitive race of the year, clocking a World-leading 1:54.74. Botswana's Oratile Nowe is setting a national record of 1:56.76.
Odira’s performance now ranks as the second-fastest in the world this year, only behind Hodgkinson and ahead of Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma (1:56.64) from the Shanghai meet in May.
After making a statement in her maiden Diamond League appearance, Odira is bullish about her prospects at the Tokyo extravaganza. "A Diamond League debut and coming out with a new PB of 1.56.52 and the second fastest time so far this season in the whole world. For sure, I am humbled and grateful to God," Odira shared.
She credited her coach, management, and fans for pushing her to new heights. "I can't thank my coach enough for helping me attain these results. I also want to thank my management (Moylsports) and not forgetting my family and all my fans," she added.
Tokyo will mark Odira’s third outing in Kenyan colours after having featured at the 2024 Paris Olympics and the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China.
In Paris, Odira clocked 1:58.53 in her semifinal heat, missing out on a spot in the final, which saw Britain's Keely Hodgkinson claim gold in 1:56.72 ahead of Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma (1:57.15) and Moraa (1:57.42).
At the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, she also missed out on the finals after a 2:16.12 finish in her semifinal heat. The 26-year-old will now join reigning world champion Mary Moraa, Chebet, and Sarah Moraa in a formidable Kenyan quartet set to challenge for podium spots in Tokyo.
Odira booked her ticket to the global showdown after clinching top honours at the national trials on July 22 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
She clocked 2:13.85 to edge out Vivian Chebet (2:14.05) and Sarah Moraa (2:14.31) in a tactical race.
