Mathare United’s recruit John Macharia has set his sights on guiding the Slum Boys back to the summit of Kenyan football as they gear up for the 2025/26 campaign.
The Nairobi-based outfit confirmed the signing of the forward from Bandari on a one-year deal, hailing the addition of a player with both pedigree and flair. "We are delighted to announce that Kenyan international, John Macharia, has committed his future to Mathare United, signing a one-year deal."
"Capped by the Harambee Stars, the left-footed forward spent last season with Bandari," the statement from the club read.
Macharia made his international debut in 2021 during Kenya's 1-0 triumph over South Sudan in an international friendly match.
Having last lifted the league crown in 2008, Mathare will be banking on Macharia’s guile and left-footed magic to spark a title charge. Macharia has wasted no time in declaring his intent.
"It's been a while since Mathare won the league. As a player, I believe we can win the League again. I believe being part of this team will have a positive impact, and I am confident we will have positive results."
"I am here to help the team win the League or at least help the team win silverware this coming season and finish in a good position in the League," Macharia remarked.
Macharia's signing is part of the Slum Boys' strategic plan to charge for a better placing after a strong finish last season. In the 2024/25 season, Mathare finished 10th in the League standings, having amassed 42 points.
Head coach John Kamau knows exactly what he’s getting in Macharia, having worked with him during his stint in the Kenyan U-20 set-up. Blessed with pace, trickery and a taste for the spectacular, the forward insists Mathare’s style of play suits him down to the ground.
"Mathare is a team that has had a great reputation for way before and it's a team any player would want to play."
"I am glad to be here, I feel at home. I am here to achieve my dreams," he said. The forward also highlighted the Slum Boys' style of play, which he says also suits him. "I love the style of play of Mathare because it fits me, and that is what inspired me to join the team."
Macharia brings with him a wealth of experience from stints at home and abroad. He spent four seasons in Georgia’s top flight with Kolkheti Poti after leaving high school, before returning during the COVID-19 pandemic to join record KPL champions Gor Mahia. His spell at K'Ogalo saw him win two league titles (2022/23 and 2023/24) in four seasons.
