
National boys’ basketball champions Laiser Hill Academy on Sunday won their third consecutive game at the ongoing Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association games in Kakamega.
Laiser Hill, coached by Anthony Kirimi, beat Lukenya Academy 57-45 at Kakamega Police Canteen. Lukenya led 31-23 at the break of the entertaining game, but Laiser recovered in the third and fourth quarters to win it.
Tyrel Ian scored a game high of 15 points for Laiser Hill, while Alor Deng added 12. On the other hand, Dominic Yor was the top scorer for Lukenya Academy with 16, while Kevin Irakoze scored 12 points.
Kirimi said: “The players showed character because we were trailing up to the last quarter. This shows we are title contenders.”
Laiser Hill captain, Dynokem Ochieng', said: “I’m happy because we recovered to salvage the game in the third quarter. We now turn our focus to the next game.”
In another game, Dagoretti High overcame Lumala Secondary 95-46, while I.T.S Gitisi defeated Kenya’s Dr Aggrey 88-72 at Kakamega High School.
In boys’ hockey, it was sweet revenge for St Anthony’s Kitale, coached by Kevin Keegan, after beating regional and national champions Musingu High 2-1. Collins Kimutai and Daniel Kipchirchir scored for the Kitale side, while Musingu’s consolation was scored by Brian Anzeze. M-Pesa Academy and Kyadondo battled to a 1-1 draw.
In girls’ volleyball, East Africa champions Kesogon Mixed and national champions Kwanthanze continued with their winning streak.
Kesogon overcame Uganda’s Bukedea Comprehensive 3-0 (25-13, 25-9, 25-15) while Kwanthanze beat Soweto Academy 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-19) to enhance their chances of qualifying for the semifinals.
In the boys’ category, Kenya’s debutants Mwaluphamba were beaten 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 31-29) by P.S.V.F Huye to condemn them to their third loss of the championship.
In football, Kenyan champions St Joseph’s Boys' Kitale suffered a 2-1 loss to 14-time champions St Mary’s School Kitende in an ill-tempered game at Kakamega High School.
Elsewhere, Musingu High School returned to winning ways after beating rivals Highway Secondary 3-2 at Mukumu Boys. Kevin Manani, Quimba Shaban, and Anan Okumu scored for the Scorpions while Lius Ochieng and Rial Beliew replied for Highway.
Butere Boys bagged their second win of the competition after beating Kicukiro from Rwanda 2-0. In the girls’ category, Butere Girls defeated Arch Njenga 2-1 in a Kenyan derby.
