Nakuru Golf Club Lady Captain Margaret Mutwasi is on a mission well beyond the fairways and greens, determined to grow the women’s game from the grassroots up.
For Mutwasi, the captain’s badge isn’t just an honour, it’s a call to action. “We have made incredible strides, but we are not yet where we should be,” she admits. Mutwasi is committed to increasing female participation in golf while honouring the trailblazers who paved the way.
She believes the game naturally suits women, citing patience, discipline and composure as qualities many already possess, noting that they just need the opportunity to shine. A proud golfer herself, Mutwasi cherishes her most memorable moment on the course.
“The proudest moment of my golfing journey was achieving a hole-in-one during a Club Nite event in 2018 on hole No. 15 at Nakuru Golf Club. Another unforgettable highlight was when I scored my first 2 Club. I was elated,” she said.
Beyond birdies and bogeys, Mutwasi sees golf as a powerful vehicle for tourism, mental wellness and youth development, but insists that meaningful progress will take more than passion. “It is time Kenya took the sport more seriously,” she says pointedly. Her introduction to the game was unexpected. Six years ago, she found herself at Kakamega Sports Club, not as a golfer, but as a host for a tournament.
What captivated her that day was not the swing mechanics or scorecards but the pride on players’ faces, the camaraderie, and the inclusive spirit of the game. That encounter stirred something in her.
“I just wanted to understand the game, not necessarily to stick with it forever, but to try,” she recalls. She joined the club, embraced the sport and in 2018, relocated to Nakuru, where she became part of a thriving golfing community.
Then came a tough stretch, the loss of both parents in 2019, which forced her off the course for nearly three years. In 2021, she made a comeback and ran for Lady Captain at the Nakuru club, which she eventually lost. In 2024, she returned to the ballot and this time she won. Today, she’s channelling that same determination into mentorship.
Under her watch, Nakuru Golf Club has launched beginner clinics, ramped up support for ladies' tournaments and become a home for rising talent.
