The 2025 edition of the Safari Sevens will be held at Nyayo Stadium from October 10-12, the Kenya Rugby Union has announced.
The tournament is set to return to Nyayo for the first time since 2021, when Shujaa beat Germany in the final to lift the trophy.
The 2023 edition was held at the RFUEA grounds, while the 2024 edition took place at Machakos Stadium.
The statement read, "The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has confirmed that the 2025 edition of the Safari 7s tournament will be held at the Nyayo Stadium. This will be the first time the tournament shall be held here since 2021, when Shujaa emerged victorious."
This will be the fourth time the Safari 7s will be hosted at the 35,000-seater stadium. The venue had previously hosted the tournament in 2011 and 2012, following a surge in attendance that the RFUEA grounds could no longer accommodate.
Shujaa and Costa Blanca are the current defending champions, having claimed the men’s and women’s titles respectively during the 2024 tournament in Machakos.
Kenya is expected to field two teams, Shujaa and Morans, in the men's category and two Lionesses and Cubs in the women's category. The winner of the National Sevens Series, currently underway, is expected to compete in the tournament.
Teams expected to come for the two-day tournament include Uganda Cranes, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Shogun Rugby and a provincial side from South Africa. In the women's category, holders Costa Blanca, Zimbabwe and Tunisia Tropics are expected to participate.
Shujaa and Lionesses are using the tournament as preparation for the start of the second-tier World Sevens Series, expected to start in January 2026.
KRU vice chairman Moses Ndale said that the event has been identifying sponsors and logistics for the tournament.
"Now that the venue is known and the dates are out, we have the opportunity to look for sponsors and logistics, security and at the same time work with the Ministry of Sports to ensure a seamless tournament,” observed Ndale.
