General Service Unit (GSU) men's volleyball team Gideon Tarus says his recognition as the Betika/SJAK Coach of the Month for July has inspired him to push further in his journey to rebuild, win championships and make a lasting impact.

“This is a big moment. Recognition is good,” he said after receiving the award on Thursday at the KCB Sports Club in Ruaraka, Nairobi.

Tarus, who has guided GSU to an unbeaten run in the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National League, said the award serves as fuel for his next phase, both as a tactician and a mentor.

“Coaches being acknowledged the same way as players gives morale. It means a lot to me."

He went on to add that back in 2022, he was recognised in Tanzania during the Nyerere Cup that ran for six months.

"Now to come back, rebuild my team, win championships, impact players and make a change, that’s what matters,” Tarus added.  GSU have been in fine form since suffering a painful loss to Kenya Prisons in the Kenya Cup final earlier this year.

The defeat prompted a tactical rethink, with Tarus reorganising his backline and reception systems adjustments that have since seen the team rise to the top of the standings while dropping only two sets in July.

Their most notable performance came in the leg final, where GSU brushed off rivals Kenya Defence Forces 3-1 at Kasarani Stadium. Tarus credits the turnaround to player belief, improved depth and a hunger to restore the team’s reputation.

“It’s about attitude, discipline, and preparing players not just for now, but for what’s ahead. I want to raise players who can stand on any stage and deliver,” he added.

Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) President James Wahindi praised Tarus for his leadership, consistency and long-term approach to team building.

“This award is a celebration of the quiet but impactful work that coaches like Gideon Tarus do behind the scenes,” Wahindi said.  “His influence at GSU has been immense. He’s built a competitive team that continues to perform at the highest level.”

“When you see GSU dominating the league and Kenyan volleyball making continental strides, you realise the role played by visionary coaches like Tarus. We’re proud to honour him,” he added.
