Bwake begin rugby title defence in style as Butere and Kwanthanze dominate

Top talents clash as national school games enter high gear.

National secondary schools rugby 7s champions Friends School Bwake started their title defence on a winning note after beating Lenana School 19-0 at the Bull Ring in Kakamega.

Emmanuel Barasa scored three times for Bwake with Brandon Chesoli converting twice. 

Bwake’s Director of Rugby, Ben Amboko, said: “We started slow but picked up momentum in the second half. This game was the biggest test in the pool, and we came out victorious.”

Former champions Koyonzo needed a last-minute try to beat minnows Friends School Anjego 10-7 in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

“It was a good game, but the boys made silly mistakes. We would have killed the game in the first half. I hope they will rise to the occasion in the second game,” said Anjego coach and principal J.J. Masime.

In a highly entertaining game, Bungoma High School overcame Musingu High 22-17 in a western region derby, while St Mary’s School Yala narrowly saw off a stubborn MPesa Foundation Academy 15-14.

Marsabit High upset Kitondo School 14-12 while Laiser Hill defeated Gede 38-10. Western region champions St Peter’s Mumias saw off Alliance High 34-0.

In girls’ football, three-time national champions Butere Girls’ qualified for the semifinals after a 2-0 win over Rift Valley’s Nasokol. Butere started their campaign with an emphatic 5-0 win over Dr Charles Muli.

Their Western region counterparts, Madira Girls’, sailed through after overcoming Mwamambeyu 2-0 and Kobala Girls’ 1-0.

Kobala, from Nyanza, revived their hopes of a semifinal slot with a 1-0 win over Nairobi’s Dagoretti while Ruiru and Dr Charles played to a 1-1 draw.

In girls’ volleyball, Nyanza’s Nyakongo exited the championship after losing their second consecutive match — 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 12-25, 24-26, 15-12) to Bishop Sulumeti from Western region at Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology.

East Africa champions Kesogon progressed to the semifinals after humbling Kinale Girls’ 3-0 (25-12, 25-7, 25-12) while national champions Kwanthanze sailed through.

Kwanthanze dispatched North Eastern Region’s Eldas Girls’ 3-0 (25-1, 25-2, 25-4). In another game, Soweto from Nairobi beat Moi Forces 3-0 (27-25, 25-13, 25-5).

Defending champions Oyugi Ogango from Nyanza qualified for the semis after recording their second consecutive win. They walloped Dr Dorcas 124-1 in the second match following a 79-14 triumph over Kinale Girls’.

Western region’s Bukokholo reached the last four after beating Kinale Girls’ 60-31 and Dr Dorcas 99-7.

Kaya Tiwi opened their campaign with an emphatic 114-4 win over Hon DM Amin while St Joseph’s Kitale defeated Kajiampau 96-9.
