Lemotit training camp duo Cynthia Chepkirui and Miriam Chemutai are confident of delivering standout performances in their respective events at the Africa U18/U20 Championships, which kick off tomorrow in Abeokuta, Nigeria.
The pair are part of a 47-member team selected by Athletics Kenya from the national trials held on June 20 at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru. Chepkirui secured her ticket in the girls' 5,000m after crossing the line in 15:37.82, outkicking Joyline Chepkemoi (15:44.83) and Sharon Chepkemoi (15:47.13). Chepkirui is bullish about her chances of coming back home with gold.
"I am thankful I was able to make the team during the Trials in Nakuru. This is my first time to represent Kenya, and I feel happy. My preparations have been good, and I am hoping for the best when we go to Nigeria," Chepkirui said.
The 16-year-old upcoming distance star has been in top form since the 2024 season. She stamped her authority at the second edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country on December 7, 2024, cutting the tape in 21:17 to win the women's U20 6km race. Yvonne Jepchirchir (21:43) and Joyline Chepkemoi (21:50) completed the podium. The 2025 campaign saw her open her season with a 1,500m victory at the fifth AK track and field meet on April 25, clocking 4:21.42.
She upgraded to the 5,000m event in the sixth meeting on May 16, stopping the clock in 15:44.81 to claim victory. On May 31, she tested herself at the Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour, finishing a strong fourth place in 15:44.81.
Her most recent outing was at the National Championships on June 26-27, where she finished second in the 5,000m, clocking 15:40.83 behind Rebecca Mwangi (15:39.78).
Meanwhile, Chemutai secured her ticket in the 3,000m event, winning in 9:08.05 ahead of Sheila Chepng'eno (9:10.50) and Judy Chepkoech (9:12.33).
Chemitai is hoping to make amends after missing out on a medal at the 2024 World U20 championships in Lima, Peru. At the World U20, Chemutai placed 14th in the 1,500m race, clocking 4:26.80. "I was at the World U20 in Peru last year. As I prepare for Nigeria, I want to deliver a good performance because I could not do well in Peru," she said.
