Joseph Nyaga of Safari Simba's Club and Kendra Masiga braved treacherous conditions to emerge overall winners in the men’s and women’s categories during the seventh edition of the Sokoke Forest Mountain Bike Challenge held on Sunday in Watamu.
Organised by A Rocha Kenya—an environmental conservation and community development organisation—the annual race serves a greater purpose: raising funds to support the education of children living around the ecologically significant Arabuko-Sokoke Forest.
Despite heavy rains and overcast skies, Nyaga and Masiga powered through the soaked trails to claim top honours, each walking away with a cash prize of Sh50,000.
Runners-up Bernard Njoroge and Nancy Debe pocketed Sh30,000, while Ephantus Gicheru and Monica Jelimo, who finished third in the men's and women’s categories respectively, earned Sh10,000 each.
The gruelling course wound through the forest’s rugged, muddy trails, offering participants not just a physical challenge but a test of endurance, willpower and commitment to a cause greater than themselves.
“Despite the rain, we’re out here showing support for the children and the environment,” Nyaga said.
The event is more than just cycling, but competing for a cause.
"Cycling for a cause like this is incredibly rewarding," he added.
The event, now a staple on the local sporting calendar, attracted elite cyclists and enthusiastic amateurs.
Various categories cater to all skill levels—from fierce competition to leisurely fun rides—ensuring inclusivity and wide participation.
A Rocha Kenya’s event coordinator, Patrick Kilimo, emphasised the impact of the challenge beyond the sport.
"Today is not just about cycling; it's about making a difference in the lives of these children," Kilimo said.
He added that the funds raised would go directly to supporting underprivileged children.
"The funds we raise will go directly to education initiatives in the forest communities, helping to ensure that children have access to learning resources and opportunities."
Local businesses added to the festive atmosphere by offering food, drinks and support to drenched but determined riders.
