Hit Squad’s latest female light-welterweight sensation, Cynthia Mwai, has her sights on solidifying her status as the best in the division during the upcoming Kenya Open Boxing Championship.

Scheduled to take place from April 16-19 at Charter Hall in Nairobi, this premier boxing event promises to be a showcase of talent, with Mwai leading the charge against a backdrop of rising competition.

Mwai enters the competition with confidence after competing at the IBA World Women’s Boxing Championship in Serbia last month. Her punches, sharp and precise, speak of a warrior’s spirit tempered by years of rigorous training.

“I’m ready for the task ahead. I want to maintain my status as Kenya’s best female boxer in the light welterweight division,” Mwai said.

Her ascent in the boxing world has been nothing short of meteoric. At just 20, she made her debut and clinched the national novices title in 2023.

She developed her skills at the Nyahururu Boxing Club under the guidance of coach David Wambua, becoming known for her exceptional talent and work ethic.

Her journey continued as she represented the Mombasa Combined at the Africa Championships in Tanga, Tanzania.

Despite a setback against bronze medallist Najma Isike, Mwai’s resolve remained unshaken. In 2024, she solidified her standing by winning the intermediate lightweight title, a victory that caught the attention of national selectors.

This recognition culminated in her selection in the national squad to the Women’s World Championships in Serbia.

The experience gained on this international stage has fortified her confidence and sharpened her skills, making her a formidable contender as the Kenya Open approaches.

She faces a formidable opponent in Sonia Atieno, a young prodigy with a hunger for victory.

Atieno’s victory over Cynthia Wambui of Nairobi in Thika on April 5 showcased her potential and marked her as a serious contender in the light-welterweight division.
