African Mini Classic Rally gets Sh2m boost from Victoria Bank

The rally has attracted 21 seasoned drivers, including six-time Kenya rally champion Ian Duncan, who will team up with navigator Jaspal Matharu in a Nissan Datsun 280Z.

• The rally will consist of three stages a day. The first two days will see the drivers tackle grueling 100km stages, while the third day will feature a 70km test of skill and endurance.

Victoria Commercial Bank (VCB) has stepped up with a Sh2 million sponsorship for the East African Mini Classic Safari Rally set for this week in Eldoret.

The event, which starts tomorrow to Sunday, has attracted 21 seasoned drivers, including six-time Kenya rally champion Ian Duncan, who will team up with navigator Jaspal Matharu in a Nissan Datsun 280Z.

Another strong contender is Piers Daykin—a  former multiple KNRC navigators’ champion.

He will drive a Nissan Datsun 280Z alongside navigator Lloyd Destro.  Daykin navigated Lee Rose to two victories in the Guru Nanak Rally.

Khalib Shaikh is bringing his vast navigation experience to the fore as he seeks to guide driver Ghalib Hajee to victory in their Porsche 911.

Also in the race is Shakeel Khan who will drive the Ford Escort MK1 alongside his navigator Assad Mughal.

Present during the sponsorship announcement were  East African Safari Rally general manager Rohit Bhudia and operations manager Riyaz Ismail,  Victoria Commercial Bank PLC  CEO Yogesh Pattni and Jay Ladha, relationship manager. 

Rohit expressed gratitude for  Victoria Bank's support, stating, “The bank’s contribution went beyond financial assistance as it reflected their commitment to our automotive heritage and regional development.”

The funds will be instrumental in organising the event, nurturing local talent and boosting tourism across East Africa in line with the bank's mission to support impactful community projects.
