Ulinzi key hurdle in Water Queens’ title defence

Women's champions Nairobi Water Queens coach Jack Ochieng said he has one more important hurdle to clear in retaining the Kenya Handball Federation League title.

The veteran tactician was speaking after his charges defeated rivals National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) 28-26 at Nyayo Stadium.

The winners, who were down 15-11 up at the break have 38 points, the same as leaders Ulinzi Sharks. Both have played 20 games.

“We started badly and allowed them so much space, which they exploited,” said Ochieng’.

“I changed tactics in the second half and the girls responded to work their way up and seal the win.”

“We will return to serious training as we have a determining fixture against Ulinzi Sharks. It’s a must-win game.”

The Millers, who have lost three games to bag 32 points, were led by Naomy Muyoka, who had seven goals.

In the men’s fixtures, Kitale-based Trans Nzoia defeated Daystar University 35-27 after leading 17-9 at halftime.

Brian Etyang made 10 goals and Sandez Kipkorir added nine while Amos Okwako nailed 10 for the students.

Boomerang led 15-11 at the break to rip Hunters 39-24. Josephat Diogo and Elvis Kipkemboi had five goals each for Boomerang. Levi Ndwiga shot seven and Edward Wangongi had six for the losers.

Champions NCPB blanked the Buccaneers 43-30. The losers produced the top marksman, Randy Ochieng, who hit 14 goals.

Ulinzi whipped General Service Units (GSU) 25-23 to cling onto the top spot. Kevin Imo provided eight goals for the soldiers and Christopher Mayiende replied with nine.

Equity Bank humiliated Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (Jkuat) 33-18. Nicholas Munyua shot seven goals for the Bankers.

Strathmore University had 11 goals from Moses Odhiambo as they beat Trans Nzoia 37-25. Boomerang eclipsed Nanyuki 37-26 as George Adao bagged seven goals.
