Seahorses Club hopes to topple Braeburn School at the Nationals Swimming Championship this weekend at the M-pesa  Academy in Thika.

Seahorses coach Peter Mwangangi said his charges had embarked on an intensive three-week training camp in Machakos in readiness for the two-day event which has attracted over 1000 participants.

"Mwangangi said he expects a competitive championship and noted his charges are ready for the event. We hope to win as many races and bag the overall trophy,” added Mwangangi

The championship has attracted participants from various counties, including Machakos, Kiambu, Nairobi, Mombasa, Murang'a, Kajiado, Nyeri, Laikipia, Uasin Gishu and Kisumu.

The event is building on the momentum from the previous national championship held last November at the Kasarani Aquatics Arena, where Braeburn emerged victorious.

The event will act as a qualifier for the ninth Africa Aquatics Zone 3 Championship in Burundi in October and the World Aquatics Swimming Championship in Budapest, Hungary in December.

Executive Committee member Heize Kahindo said preparations for the event are almost complete.

“This is one of the biggest swimming events on the calendar and we urge those who have not registered to do so before tomorrow (Friday)," he added.

This is the first time the national swimming championship is being hosted in Kiambu and the greater Mt. Kenya Region. Kahindo said the federation was keen to see the sport growing in other counties.

“Traditionally, swimming centred around Nairobi and Mombasa and we want to see other counties hosting this event in the years to come,” he said.

The championship has secured backing from several sponsors and partners, including Touride Adventures, Yingfa Swimwear, Optiven Real Estate, Avenue Healthcare, Zetech University, TW Solar, M & E Sportswear and Genesis Sports Limited.
