The National Roll Ball team are among the five nominees shortlisted for the 2023 Sports Personality of the Year Awards (SOYA) Sports Team Men.

The recognition comes as the event gears up for its 20th anniversary since its inception in 2004.

The outstanding sportsmen and women will be feted in an anticipated gala event scheduled for February 23, in Nairobi.

This is the first time roll ball has earned a nomination, setting the stage up for competition against formidable contenders such as Kabras Sugar rugby team, the national football under-18 (Junior Stars), Kakamega Homeboyz FC, and the National Sevens side, Shujaa.

Roll ball's momentous journey to the top echelons of sporting recognition began with a historic triumph, as they clinched their maiden World Championship title to outclass hosts India in a gripping final match that ended 7-4 in their favour.

This victory served as a redemption for Kenya, who had suffered defeat at the hands of India in the final four years prior.

Kenyan men's team asserted their supremacy right from the group stages, delivering resounding victories against Sierra Leone, Iran, France, Ivory Coast, and Sri Lanka.

Despite facing challenges, including a delayed arrival for the tournament, they remained unfazed and emerged victorious in the semi-finals with a commanding win over Latvia.

Meanwhile, Shujaa etched their name in history by securing a monumental victory against favourites South Africa to clinch the Africa Sevens title, thus securing their qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Adding to the accolades, Kakamega Homeboyz FC concluded the year on a high note by claiming their maiden FKF Cup title and securing a spot to represent Kenya in the Caf Confederation Cup.

Their stellar performance throughout the season, including a notable triumph over league winners Gor Mahia, underscored their emergence as a force to be reckoned with in Kenyan football.

Amidst these stellar achievements, the SOYA Awards will provide a platform to honour and celebrate the remarkable contributions of Kenya's sporting fraternity.
