A number of matches were canceled on the second day of the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) national league due to the heavy downpour experienced at the Koitalel Samoei University grounds in Mosoriot, Nandi County.

Before the rains halted the action, champions Kenya Prisons and former champions Kenya Pipeline had recorded their victories in men's and women's matches respectively.

Prisons men led by Dennis Mokua beat Equity Bank in a five-set thriller of 25-17, 20-25, 18-25, 25-19, and 16-14.

“I am happy we won the match despite the competition from our opponents. My players did not panic despite the pressure from our rivals,” said Mokua.

In the women's cadre, Pipeline beat Nairobi Prisons in another five-set encounter of  22-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-17, and 15-7.

“We are used to indoor facilities but the outdoor event is good for us because we prepare for the Africa Zone 5 Club Championships in Rwanda,” said Gitau.

In another match, KCB thrashed the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) 3-0 (25-19, 25-16 and 25-20).

Friday’s matches paved the way for the second edition of the Heroes Community Tournament which serves off this morning at the same venue.

The event patron Paul Bitok said over 50 teams have so far confirmed for the two-day tournament.

"We shall have four categories of the senior clubs that play in the senior league, self-supporting or community teams, universities or colleges, primary and secondary schools,” explained Bitok.

The former Malkia Strikers head coach said this time, they will start early to avoid last year’s mess, where rains disrupted the semifinals and finals.

“We want to end the tournament before 1 p.m. because of the rain in this part of the country,” he added.
