Ulinzi Starlets head coach Joseph Wambua has blamed centre referee Irene Onyango for their loss to Vihiga Queens in their Women's Premier League opener on Sunday.

Vihiga, the defending champions, took a 2-1 but Wambua believes Anyango had a hand in the manner in which his team lost.

"Vihiga were just propped by the referee, otherwise we would have won the match by a big margin," Wambua said.

"But that is not the end of the road. We still have 21 more games to play. We shall put ourselves in order to ensure such challenges are dealt with on the ground," Wambua said.

The tactician was speaking to the Star on the phone on his way back to Nairobi.

However, Boniface Nyamunyamu said there will always be blame game in defeat.

"It's normal for us coaches to get someone to blame when we lose and in most cases, the referees carry the blame," Nyamunyamu said.

"My colleague raised the alarm that the referee was biased when the match was over. We didn't understand how and why."

Nyamunyamu said they capitalised on Ulinzi's mistakes to grab the win and their opponents should stop having a go at the referee.

Meanwhile, Gaspo Ladies' chairman Edward Githua was infuriated after their 1-0 loss to Bunyore Starlets at Stima Club.

"I didn't expect my team to lose when we were at home, especially going by the calibre of players we have. They (the technical bench) made a wrong substitution which gave our opponents an opportunity to dominate," Githua said.

Elsewhere, new babies Bungoma Queens held Kibera Ladies to a barren draw at Sudi Stadium in Bungoma while Nakuru City Queens drew 1-1  with Wadadia at ASK grounds in Nakuru.

Trans Nzoia Falcons suffered a 4-1 defeat to Zetech Sparks at Ndura Sports Complex in Kitale.
