NCPB meet Amazon as they chase champs Water Queens

National Cereals and Produce Board will take on Amazon in a Kenya Handball Federation women’s league clash at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

The millers’ tactician Bryan Mathews, whose side have won two of their opening fixtures of the year, remains upbeat about their chances of stopping leaders Nairobi Water Queens' 10-year dominance.     

“This will be Amazon’s first game this season and provides an opportunity for us to experiment with various systems, to win and to improve on our standings in the national league,” observed Mathews.

NCPB will bank on the exploits of the ever-dangerous trio of Sarah Mabonga, Naomy Muyuoka and Joan Akinyi for the much-needed goals as they seek to close in on Water Queens, who have bagged 149 goals in three outings.

Third-placed Ulinzi Sharks have two matches, against New Hope and Daystar University. The soldiers led by the lethal Sarah Wasike and Martha Lavenda should be too strong for their opponents.

In the men’s matches, last year’s runners Ulinzi, who have recorded two wins as they seek to challenge champions NCPB, play bottom-of-the-table Wakanda, who have lost all of their matches so far.

“We have trained well this week and we are hopeful we will reap better results this weekend,” said Ulinzi tactician Nickson Oyaro.

Engineers, who are third after three wins and a loss, meet Bungoma-based Rangers, who will be making their first trip to the city this season.

Wakanda will have their hands full again when they face off against Desert Scorpion and Rangers confront Peter Mwathi’s promising Equity Bank in their second fixtures.

On Sunday,  Rangers will have two more matches as they take on Wakanda and then play Daystar University. The students will also meet Equity Bank.

Strathmore University takes on Wakanda while Amazon come face-to-face against National Youth Service (NYS) in the last match of the week.
