Kenya Prisons and Mombasa queens are the champions of the inaugural National Olympic Committee of Kenya Beach Games in volleyball.

The finals on Sunday saw Kenya Prisons beat Mombasa Prisons 2-0 to clinch the title in the men's category while Mombasa Queens won by the same margin against Pwani University to lift the title in the women's cadre.

Kenya Prisons won in identical sets of 21-19. Mombasa Queens, on the other hand, recorded 23-21 and 21-9 set victory.

The Games end on Sunday at Buntwani Waterfront Park, in Malindi where more than 10 disciplines are featured for the inaugural edition.

National women's beach volleyball coach Salome Wanjala who witnessed the teams brush shoulders as part of a scouting mission, wants Nock to give teams enough time to prepare for both the Africa Beach Games and the World Beach Games.

"We have seen from today's finals that with good preparations, we can have a really competitive team that we can rely on. I urge Nock to put everything in place so that our teams can prepare adequately for the upcoming assignments," Wanjala said.

She went on: "This is just the start of better things to come if the performance is any barometer. Elphas Makuto impressed me the most on the Kenya Prisons team. He played with desire and determination needed from an athlete."

"There was no competition in the women's category because there were only four teams. The cut-throat competition was evident in the men's games," Wanjala added.

The Kenya Prisons team was composed of Charles Bosire, Kevin Kipkosgei, Jairus Kipkosgei and Makuto.

Gaudencia Makokha, Lilian Bitutu, Naomi Wafula and Florence Bosire all featured for Mombasa Queens.
