Kenya's Betty Chelang'at gave the country the first gold medal in the 3,000m in the ongoing World Under-20 Championships in Cali Colombia.
Chelang'at timed 9:01.03 to take gold ahead of Ethiopia's Tsiyon Abebe who timed 9:03.85 and Nancy Cherop, who won bronze in 9:05.98.
However, as expected, Kenya failed to medal in the 5,000m with Ethiopia running away with the race.
Kenya's hope Samuel Kibathi stumbled and fell in the last few metres of the race to place sixth while compatriot Nelson Mandela was eighth.
Ethiopia's Addisu Yihune won gold in the men's 5,000m in 14:03.05 while Eritrea's Merhawi Menbrahtu settled for silver in 14:03.33. Another Eritrean Samuel Habtom took bronze in 14:0367.
