In Summary

•This huge percentage was a result of closure by many companies that could not operate due to the pandemic.

•The cessation of movement imposed to prevent the spread of the virus meant loss of jobs for several people who have to move daily to get to their places of work.

Jobless graduates question their degrees.

According to a research by the  Kenya National Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate doubled from 5.2 per cent in March last year to 10.4 per cent in September after the Covid-19 hit the country.

This huge percentage was a result of closure by many companies that could not operate due to the pandemic.

The cessation of movement imposed to prevent the spread of the virus meant loss of jobs for several people who have to move daily to get to their places of work.

Therefore, the unemployment issue has turned the country into a wild society where immoral vices such as prostitution, kidnapping, drug smuggling and robbery have become new ways for people to get money.

Most have turned to such acts to survive the harsh economy and fend for their families.

In some cases, some women are forced into prostitution to cater for the needs of their children and also for their survival and other special needs at the expense of their integrity and dignity.

Others will be involved with men in smuggling illegal drugs which at times it seems like an easy getaway of obtaining money and all this at times put their lives at stake in terms of health.

Over the past two years, cases of children and even adults kidnapping have immensely increased and especially in the urban areas, where the people behind this malicious act demanded a huge amount of money as ransom to free the captive.

It is sad how people in their desperation to look for money have lost their human nature.

Young men who are just idling in town in search of jobs or ways to acquire money, most end up being introduced into drug abuse and other immoral behaviour which is staining our future.

The robbery remains pervasive at large where cases are reported every day.

In the process, most of these young people will either get killed or spend some time behind bars.

The world is no longer a peaceful global society to interact and live in for us and our future generation because nowadays committing murder, abducting little children, robbery and other awful behaviour longer disgust the human race.

Unemployment is not a justification for our lousy behaviours, but the government should intervene and create more job opportunities for its citizens.

Society at large should strive to become better and use genuine ways to obtain money. This will help avoid desperation to create a better and peaceful society for current and future generations.
