Eldoret City Marathon to include masters in the race

Mandago said Chekaiya High Altitude Training Camp at Kesses sub-county will soon open its doors to sportsmen and women

Uasin Gishu County Governor Jackson Mandago has promised to include the Masters' category in the annual Eldoret City Marathon next year.

This, he said follows the super performance of Uasin Gishu athletes who dominated the 13th edition of Africa Open Masters Athletics Championships last week at the Nyayo National Stadium.

While addressing medalists, who paid him a courtesy call at his office in Eldoret town, the county boss said he will hold talks with Athletics Kenya on how to incorporate the race in the Eldoret City Marathon.

“With such engagements, we shall boost Masters activities and promote the marathon to attract more participants across the board,” said Mandago.

At the concluded Africa Open Masters championships, Kenya bagged 160 gold medals, 41 silver, and seven bronze to defend the title they won in Tunis, Tunisia two years ago. Out of the medals, 27 gold and 8 silver medals came from Uasin Gishu. 

Mandago said Chekaiya High Altitude Training Camp at Kesses sub-county will soon open its doors to sportsmen and women. He also said renovations at the 64 Stadium in Eldoret were at an advanced stage and the facilty will soon be complete.
