Kenya Forest Service are banking on new signings and a perfect pre-season to improve on last season's performance when the Kenya Volleyball Federation League kicks off on November 26.

KFS finished sixth on their return to the top-flight league last season, scooping 22 points in the 13-team league.

The Wachira Gatuiria-coached side lost to the General Service Unit GSU in a five-set thriller, Kenya Prisons, Kenya Defence Forces and Kenya Ports Authority but vital lessons were learnt according to the tactician.

Setter Mathias Kemboi (AP), opposite hitter Enock Kiptum (GSU) and experienced middle blocker Luke Makuto formerly of GSU, have joined KFS to boost their chances of a playoff finish.

"Kemboi adds skills to the setting department while Makuto, who is a direct replacement for Nicholas Mwangi (deceased through an accident) brings experience and leadership. Kiptum's composure is unmatched," Gatuiria remarked.

"We have a complete squad capable of guiding us to a playoff slot in our second season in this league. Last season wasn't the best but the boys showed character. The defeats not only enhanced experience but also enabled the lads to up their game."

Trail Blazers, Central Prisons and Vihiga County have joined the men's league taking the tally to 16. KFS face the former two in the first leg in Kapsabet.

"We just need to win both matches to start on a high note," said Gatuiria.

Meanwhile, KFS are set to double their tree-planting efforts this season after planting more than 5,000 trees last season before every leg.

"With our slogan 'Trees for better lives' we intend to plant more than 10,000 trees as part of efforts to conserve the environment," Gatuiria said.

Elsewhere, Kenya Prisons coach David Lung'aho has blasted the federation for allowing the first leg to be played outdoor after it was unanimously agreed that it would take place indoors.

"It is a step back to allow the first leg to be staged outside but hopefully things will change in the future," Lung'aho stated.
