Chess Kenya reactivate competition after Covid-19 break

Chess Kenya President Benard Wanjala, has announced the resumption of competition after the long break occasioned by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Said Wanjala: “Following reduction of Covid-19 cases, we would like to return the on board events under strict Covid-19 protocols issued by the Ministry of Sports.”

“One of the venue, Nairobi Gumkhana, has been inspected and cleared by an official from the ministry and we hope many other facilities will get the greenlight.”

Wanjala said the financial implications of the ravening pandemic had made it impossible to award winners in the same way they had done in the past.

“It's also important to note that economic challenges brought about by Covid thas made it difficult to secure sponsorships and organisers may be forced to reduce our traditional prizes with our main focus being to give our members an opportunity to enjoy the game. We appeal for your understanding.”

Nakuru Open will kick off the resumption program between July 31 and August 1.

Nairobi Gymkhana Chess Championships will follow between August 14 and 15. 

Next will be the Nairobi OTB Comeback Championship that will be held on September 3-4 followed by theM ombasa Open Chess Championship on October 9-11.

The Kenya National Corporates Chess Championships is set to for September 18, followed by the Kenya National Chess Championships on December 9- 13.

“Anybody else willing to organise an event should get in touch with Chess Kenya for further guidance,” said Wanjala.
