President William Ruto delivers New Year message speaks in State House, Nakuru, on December 31, 2023.

Dear Mr President!

Congratulations on crossing over to the New Year in good health and good cheer!

Congratulations on marking the second New Year as President of the Republic of Kenya!

Mr President, the country on the high seas with no sign of dry land in sight, we are yearning for the promises you gave us two years ago.

I trust this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. As a concerned citizen of Kenya, I am writing to you today with a deep sense of responsibility and hope for our beloved nation.

The purpose of this letter is not to criticise or undermine your leadership but to express the concerns shared by many Kenyans who, like me, are looking for a course correction and a fulfillment of the promises made in your manifesto.

It has been two years since you assumed Office as the President of the Republic of Kenya. As we navigate the high seas of our nation’s destiny, it is disheartening to note that there seems to be no sign of dry land on the horizon. The turbulence we are experiencing, both economically and socially, is causing anxiety among the citizens who had hoped for positive change under your leadership.

In your inaugural address, you spoke eloquently about your vision for Kenya – a vision that resonated with many of us who believed in your commitment to uplifting our nation. However, the reality on the ground paints a different picture, and it is with a heavy heart that I write to implore you to steer our ship back to the right course in 2024.

One of the key concerns shared by the citizens is the prevalence of the blame game that has characterised the discourse surrounding your administration. Understandably, challenges are inevitable, and it is not my intention to downplay the complexity of governing a nation. However, assigning blame without taking concrete steps toward resolution only serves to erode the trust and confidence that the people have placed in you.

As a leader, it is crucial to acknowledge the challenges faced by our nation and work collaboratively to find practical solutions. The blame game not only deflects responsibility but also hinders progress. We urge you to rise above the blame game and engage in open and transparent communication with the citizens.

Let us work together to address the root causes of our challenges and find lasting solutions. Furthermore, we cannot overemphasise the importance of delivering on the promises outlined in your manifesto.

The people of Kenya entrusted you with their votes based on the belief that you would bring about positive change and address the pressing issues facing our nation. It is essential to prioritise and implement the policies and programmes that were articulated during your campaign.

Economic stability, job creation, healthcare, education, and infrastructure development were among the key pillars of your manifesto. As we approach the end of your second year in office, there is a growing concern that progress in these areas has been slow or nonexistent.

We implore you to expedite the implementation of your agenda, ensuring that the benefits of your policies reach the ordinary citizens who are eagerly awaiting positive change.

The state of our economy is of particular concern. The rising cost of living, inflation, and unemployment are issues that directly impact the daily lives of Kenyans. It is crucial to implement sound economic policies that promote growth, attract investments and create job opportunities. Additionally, measures should be put in place to cushion the most vulnerable members of our society from the harsh economic realities they currently face.

In the education sector, there is a need for urgent attention. Our children are the future of this nation, and their access to quality education should not be compromised.

Adequate resources must be allocated to improve infrastructure, enhance the quality of teaching, and ensure that every child, regardless of their socio-economic background, has equal access to educational opportunities.

Healthcare is another critical area that requires immediate intervention. The ongoing global health crisis has underscored the importance of a robust and resilient healthcare system. It is imperative to invest in healthcare infrastructure, equip our medical professionals, and ensure that every citizen has access to affordable and quality healthcare services.

In conclusion, Mr President, the time is now for decisive action and visionary leadership. We, the citizens of Kenya, look to you to steer our nation back to the right course and fulfil the promises made during your campaign. It is not too late to make a positive impact and leave a lasting legacy for the generations to come.

I remain hopeful that you will consider the concerns raised in this letter with the utmost seriousness and take the necessary steps to address them. The ship of Kenya is in your hands, and the citizens are counting on you to navigate us toward a brighter and more prosperous future.

Wishing you wisdom, strength, and success in the noble task of leading our great nation.

Yours sincerely,

Michael Mugwang’a
