Forty participants will represent the country at the International Tennis Federation Under 14 category slated for Nairobi Club from December 15-21.

A total of 24 boys and 16 girls will be up against the continent's best as they seek to fly the country's flag higher.

Some of the players will however have to go through a qualifying round to get to the main draw, according to Tennis Kenya (TK) administrator Nancy Nduku.

"A good number will have to go through the qualifiers on the weekend before we start but I am confident a good number of them will make the cut,” said Nduku.

Among the top boys in the competition will be Ayush Bhandari, Aaron Shah, Baraka Ominde, Edward Mwakio, Aaron Njogu, Brian Nyakundi, Reysan Bulsara, Charlie Mboya among others.

In the girls' category, Stacy Yego will lead the Kenyan charge alongside Nyawira Olembo, Nancy Kawira, Seline Ahoya, and Mercy Oresha among others.

Nduku revealed that the players have been busy training at various courts and believes the remaining two weeks will be enough to prepare for the week-long event.

"The players are excited about the event which is our last before we break for the Christmas and New Year holidays."

Nduku said with the onset of the new Covid Variant Omicron, it will be difficult to invite other players especially from the continent. "We are reviewing the situation and we will have an update next week," she added.

Elsewhere, Kenya's top-ranked junior Angela Okutoyi will miss the first leg of the Women's Futures tournament in Monsatir, Tunisia starting next week.

Okutoyi is taking a rest after a grueling ITF Under -18 tournament last week in Tunis. Coach Francis Rogoi said they decided the event to be fit and fresh for the subsequent two tournaments.

“We opted to rest and be in the best possible shape and I am confident Angie will do well."
