THE first public technical institute in Mukurweini subcounty, Nyeri county, has been launched.
Mukurweini Technical Training Institute was commissioned on Saturday by Deputy President William Ruto.
The first 200 students will start classes in May.
In the first phase, Sh90 million was spent on construction, Sh68 million on equipment, Sh5 million on operations and Sh3 million on furniture.
The institute will be mentored by the principal and board of directors of Mathenge Technical Institute until it can stand on its own.
Fifteeen MPs who attended the launch urged the youth to take advantage of the institute to acquire knowledge and skills.
The National Authority for the Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse chairman John Mututho told the youth to stop drinking illicit brews.
Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua said his administration will donate Sh5 million to the facility.
National Assembly Education Committee chairperson Sabina Chege said the youth should join technical institutions and acquire degrees later.
