A group of Nairobi artistes under Spellcast Media, will this weekend stage a musical play dubbed Mekatilili Wa Menza at Braeburn Theatre, Lavington Nairobi.

Mekatilili is a fictional rendition of the freedom fighter, the story follows the Giriama woman's struggles even as she is exiled halfway across the land from her home but resiliently makes her way back to stage an uprising against the British Imperialist Charles Hobley.

The story highlights battles on various levels, freedom in religion, homeland, family and for womanhood. Viewer discretion is advised for theme, violence, language and for photo sensitive epilepsy.

Michael Muita who is one of the marketing team said that they chose the popular folklore character, Mekatilili because "the amazing story needs to be told and retold for not only the reminiscence of empowerment of women but also for her selfless fight for freedom and culture preservation".

"The story is touching," he added, "It needs to be retold often, a critical time of societal emphasis on non-discrimination, women just as much as men are being called to action to take initiative in leading their peers and neighbors in a moral fight to preserve their culture A moral fight to appreciate diversity. A moral fight for humanity."

Nominated senator Emma Mbura claims she will take up the task of Mekatilili as a woman Mijikenda fighter.
