Built between 1593-1596 by the Portuguese, the sole purpose of this fort was to act as military fortification for the Portuguese living in east Africa.

Over the years this Fort has changed hands after being captured by the English, Arabs, and Portuguese. This iconic landmark was also an important trade route on the East African coast.

Fort Jesus also features a museum where one can go and marvel at guns and artifacts used during that time. Chinese, Arabic, and Persian porcelain are also available for viewing.

Once done with the Fort Jesus tour, step outside and have a taste of Swahili cuisine alongside Arabic coffee from the vendors outside.
